Für sein
jüngstes Kunstprojekt verändert François-Joseph Lapointe sein Mikrobiom, um
metagenome Selbstporträts zu schaffen, die er Microbiome Selfies nennt.
Sie illustrieren die Metamorphose seines bakteriellen Selbst. Für die
Performance 1000 Handshakes wird Lapointe bei der Eröffnung der
transmediale Besucher_innen die Hände schütteln und so allmählich die
unsichtbare mikrobielle Gemeinschaft in seiner Handfläche verändern.
Assistent_innen entnehmen ihm in regelmäßigen Abständen Hautproben. Die DNA
seines Mikrobioms wird anschließend analysiert, um zu enthüllen, wie wir uns
durch den Kontakt mit anderen verändern. Auf Grundlage der während der
Performance erhobenen Daten werden dann die Microbiome Selfies erstellt
und ab dem 26. Februar in der von Regine Rapp und Christian de Lutz kuratierten
Ausstellung The Other Selves: On the Phenomenon of the
Microbiome
bei
Art Laboratory Berlin gezeigt.

Im Zentrum
der Unterhaltung steht Lapointes Performance 1000 Handshakes, die
während der Eröffnungsnacht zwei Tage zuvor aufgeführt wurde. Die Performance
wirft Fragen über auf das physische und soziale Engagement auf. Die
Gesprächspartner werden die Arbeit auch im Rahmen der kommenden
Gruppenausstellung The Other Selves. On the Phenomenon of the
Microbiome reflektieren. Die Ausstellung ist Teil von Art Laboratory
Berlins neuer Reihe »Nonhuman Subjectivities« mit theoretischen Überlegungen zu
nichtmenschlichen Akteuren.

For his most recent artistic project, Lapointe is sequencing
his microbiome to produce metagenomic self-portraits, Microbiome
Selfies, which illustrate the metamorphosis of his bacterial self. The
performance 1000 Handshakes is part of this project. During the
performance Lapointe shakes hands with people passing through the opening night
of the transmediale festival, gradually changing the invisible microbial
community in the palm of his hand. Periodically, assistants take a sample from
his skin. The DNA of this microbiome will be analysed to reveal how our contact
with others shapes the microbes between us, how it changes who we are. The
performance raises awareness through physical and social engagement, through
acts of participation and exchange on social, individual and microbial levels.
The handshake, a basic and ancient act of networking forms the beginning of a
social, scientific and artistic collaboration between the performer and the
public. The data collected during this performance will then be used to generate
microbiome selfies, shown in the exhibition The Other Selves. On the
Phenomenon of the Microbiome

2016).

In the
center of the talk will be Lapointe’s performance 1000 Handshakes
, which was carried out during transmediale’s
opening night. The performance raises questions about physical and social engagement.
They will also reflect the piece as part of the upcoming group show The
Other Selves. On the Phenomenon of the Microbiome . The exhibition is
part of Art Laboratory Berlin's new series »Nonhuman Subjectivities«, consisting of
theoretical reflections on nonhuman
agents.
